I Can Run

Christmas 2008 this photo was taken, I cant believe it's nearly a year ago - I had decided I wanted to teach myself how to run, after hating it for all my life. I looked through all the books about running on amazon, I found this one for women over 40... I was way over 40, heading towards my 50's.( such a scary thought )When Heinz asked what I wanted for Christmas I told hubby that this book was ONE of the gifts I wanted. He couldn't understand why a book on running as I had never shown any interest in running since we met.
My weight at Christmas was 78kg's..( 178lbs ) at this stage I had managed to drop 4kg's (8.8lbs) with watching what I was eating, a few crash diets,( which I don't recommend ) and going to gym.

I read the book, put it next to my bed and there it lay for another 2 months before I picked it up again...In February I found the * Beginner's guide to becoming a 30 minute runner * and started thinking about adding running to my walking on the treadmill...As a dancer I have hated running for as long as I can remember...the only one 5kl fun run I ever took part in as an instructor,( to impress a guy ), I found so tough and struggled to get through it...it was a nightmare which only made me hate it even more. I told myself that my body was not designed to run...I was a dancer, and dancers don't run!!

I remember the excitement when I managed one minute of running...and 4 mins of walking in between...I puffed and panted till the next time and tried again...my first whole 5 minute run...then the 10 minute one...oh my word, I ran for 30 minutes without stopping, do you know what a victory that was for me...at the age of 47 I was running, I could run...and I was enjoying it...The furthest I've run to date is 14kl...ran it in over an hour and I never stopped once!!
No big deal for many out there, but if you knew me and knew the state I found my body in when I started - you too would be doing the victory dance with me...

I love running now, I can't wait to get to gym ( during the cold days ) and hit the treadmill and run...music pumping in my ears motivating me along the way...the sweat that pours off me, such a good feeling...after a run I feel alive and ready to start my day...
IF I CAN RUN THEN ANYONE CAN RUN...

~ Thanks for visiting my blog ~

Love this post, and also love running.

The one thing I have learned really early on is my pace is my pace, I try not to compare myself with others, because in the end I am competing with myself and that's what keeps me going.

I envy the fact that you like to run on the treadmill, I hate it! Still trying to get use to it because we have alot of snow and cold temps during the winter, but I would much rather be outside!

Keep on Running pretty lady!

I can't wait to run :) I jog a little here and there, but really don't want to damage my joints by running a lot at my current weight. The picture of you in summer clothes is lovely! And, I read that you don't eat nuts anymore: have you tried raw nuts with no salt? Those are less addictive to me, and I still get the benefits of the actual nut without overdoing it.

I agree with you. I always hated running, now it is amazing how it is becoming my passion! I am impressed with all of your progress. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

LOVE this post!!!!
kinda reminds me of the very first mile i ran-
i was 12 and ran with my dad-it took us 15 minutes, and i thought i was going to die,but the thought of my dad,an "old man" (he was 60 then) beating me to the house, kept me from stopping and puking out a lung-LOL!!
anyways,im doing the victory dance with you sister! so proud you have found your "inner runner"
keep it up!!!!

I know exactly what the whole non-runner to runner transition feels like. I'm a swimmer myself, and as such running is not something I regularly took part in. The whole point of being a swimmer is to swim, not to run, right?

And then I started coaching. We have the swimmers do some running, and by golly I better be able to keep up. Now it's to the point where I enjoy running shorter distances (3-6 miles) and am gradually working up to longer ones. Welcome to the running club!

It's funny seeing you with the Tosca Reno book as it's her that you remind me of :D

You impress me always with your enthusiasm and spirit.
Running is not my thing as it would blow out my knees at my current weight but I admire those of you who do it.
and YES, especially at 47!
Way to Go, Marcelle!

You inspire me daily my dearest Marcelle. I aspire to jog/run someday. I have always disliked it like you.

Hope you have a lovely weekend. Thanks for being such a wonderful support!

Love it because I can compare it with how I started running and felt about it March this year: the same.

I hate running on the treadmill, it's part of my fitness program but am always glad that it's over

I love running outside, cold doesn't bother me, very hard rain does however.

I still want to run with you someday: two oldies who run, wouldn't that be nice :)

I would love to join you when Heinz is away for a few days but have to admit it would be a pleasure to meet the lovely Heinz too!

I don't mind being alone, I have been many times in the past when R. had to go away for his work many times.

I usually blog every two days but hadn't had time yesterday. Promise I'll blog again on Sunday.

Enjoy your Fridaynight wine, I'll join you later this evening

When I first started running, I ran 1 minute, walked 1 minute 10 times. And I thought I was going to die at the end of it. I too feel like becoming a runner is one of the greatest achievements in my life. It is hard and it takes perserverance but the rewards are huge!

So empowering isn't it! You've come so far so fast. I'm really proud of you!

I've got some work to do before I start running - but at LEAST I have a formula of HOW TO GET THERE! Thank you for that - I'm pretty excited!

Great job on accomplishing your goal on running. It's painful, but always worth it when you're done! What an inspiration. I'm a beginner and hope to be where you're at someday!

You are such a great example to anyone who might say, "I've never done it before so I won't try." You just did it - and now look at you!! Amazing.

Oh ... you are such an inspiration!!!! Maybe I should try it on the treadmill too, but I have that feeling of tripping or falling in front of a gym full of people !!!! :) I know it would get rid of those wobbly bits faster?

what a great post.

and what you say is so true - most anything that WE do - starts with the first step - one foot in front of the other.

And when we are actually DOING it - those NOT doing it think there is something special about US. And there isn't - we all start in the same place.

Alright, I am 41 (soon to be 42) so now I can't use the excuse that I am too old to run! :D

Hope you have a great weekend!

I want to run. It looks like you are free and nothing matters when people run. Right now it hurts my knees but I do try alittle here and there.

I used to be able to run *giggle* I wish I had more time. Maybe when the kids are a bit bigger.
